Bring Your Stories Matter to Your Organization
Help the older adults you serve discover that their experiences are worth remembering—and their stories are worth preserving.
Your Stories Matter is a guided writing and storytelling experience created to help older adults recall meaningful memories, turn those memories into stories, strengthen their voices, and build connection with others.
Participants do not need to consider themselves writers, and they do not have to be interested in writing a book. The program begins with a much simpler belief:
Every Life Has Stories Worth Telling
Through guided reflection, memory-mining activities, writing and storytelling exercises, conversation, optional sharing, and simple technology, participants are encouraged to preserve the experiences that have shaped their lives.
A Program Designed for Older Adults
Your Stories Matter can be Adapted for:
Retirement communities
Retirement organizations
Senior and community centers
Libraries
Churches and senior ministries
Lifelong-learning programs
Retired faculty and professional organizations
What Participants Can Experience
Through Your Stories Matter, participants are encouraged to:
Discover meaningful memories they want to preserve
Turn life experiences into individual stories
Strengthen confidence in their own voices
Learn practical tools for remembering and writing
Use simple technology, including voice dictation, to capture memories
Reflect on the meaning behind important life experiences
Share stories in a supportive environment when they choose
Preserve family and personal history for future generations
Build connection and community through storytelling
The goal is not to create professional writers.
The goal is to help people recognize the value of the lives they have lived and give them practical ways to preserve the stories only they can tell.
Tested in Community
Your Stories Matter is currently being developed and refined through a writing group at Traditions Independent Living Community in Smyrna, Tennessee.
Participants are writing and polishing personal stories while learning memory-mining, reflection, revision, storytelling, and simple technology skills.
The experience has demonstrated something important: storytelling can become more than a writing activity. It can create conversation, confidence, connection, and renewed appreciation for a lifetime of experiences.
Please include a link in this section to the existing Your Stories Matter article about the Traditions program so visitors can read more about the pilot experience and see the program in action.
